Audio hardware poll

I’m looking for some input into the names of audio outputs on different Mac models (e.g. “Internal Speakers”, “Line Out”, etc.) I’m especially interested in the names of your digital outputs. If you could post them in the comments I’d be very appreciative.

Some good news is forthcoming.

I on my mac mini I have “Headphones” and “USB Audio”

I have an aluminum 24″ iMac:

    Name: Digital Out
    Type: Built-in Output

Please list the model as well as the output names, as Martin has done. I’m guessing that perhaps Constantine has an older Mac Mini since the new ones should have digital output?

The both versions i tried both detected my bluetooth jabra so it looks like it autodetects somehow :-)

It auto-detects through Portaudio’s device detection. I’m guessing you probably don’t want to listen to music through your Jabra, though :)

I’m trying to see if the digital outputs always have the word “Digital” in their name, so that I can tell what outputs could support AC-3/DTS. Blasting encoded audio to non-digital outputs is kind of rude.

omg, yeah .. that’s a bad idea to do that.
But why detect and autochange something what the end user should setup in their prefs?
I can’t think of any app that detects if the stream is ac3 and then switches to another output device.

If you want to decrease the number of channels .. maybe you can see how other opensource apps are doing that (VLC, mplayer, niceplayer)

    My Macbook has

    Builtin stereo speakers
Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack)
Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out (minijack)

I guess its SPDIF, to use 5.1 or higher, you have to use a mini-jack to toslink,

I use a Mac Mini, combined optical digital audio output for 5.1 output to a receiver.

I have a white 24″ iMac and got:

    Analog and Digital: Built-in Output

I get music playing using analog, using digital xbmc crashes when opening a mp3.

Amazing work with xbmc for osx! I am very impressed :-)
I’m using 0.01 and got got HD videos playing (without audio, some crashes, some playing in 10x the speed). Great work!

Does anyone know how I can go backwards (one directory back) using my keyboard?

    btw.

don’t get me wrong, I really think that the partial video playing is great!
I wasn’t expecting video capabilities at all.

    Macbook Pro, model identifier MacbookPro3,1

With nothing in the output jack: “Internal Speakers”
With an optical cable in the output jack: “Digital Out”
With headphones or any other 1/8″ line in the output jack: “Headphones”

  13. putnam January 20th, 2008 4:53 am

    Mac Mini, model identifier Macmini2,1

Exact same as above with the MBP3,1.

I would imagine all these output names would be enumerated in some language/plist file somewhere. It’d be a lot easier than asking people in the comments. I’ll see if I can find one.

BTW, that’s an Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini.

Like Constantine, I have “Headphones” and “USB Audio”, and USB Audio is the only way to achieve 5.1 in every Mac (including MacBook and Mac Mini) to analog-only speakers. And these speakers, although there are not the most accuracy, they are today outrageously priced :)

It would be really wonderful if you could add support to this USB Audio more than 2.0 (it currently supports that), and XBMC on OSX would be, at least for me, absolutely perfect. The only player I have tried with this level of support is VLC, so it would not be very difficult to get this functionality, as long the source is there.

Thanks for the excellent work, XBMC is already fantastic!
