Please take our survey

While we sweat away perfecting the Apple Remote/Universal Remote code, please help us out by taking our short survey. We’re trying to get a better sense of our community, which will help us prioritize features and schedule things better in general.

I wish I could say that one lucky respondent to the survey will win an all expenses trip to Maui, where he or she will be forced to work cleaning our house for a week. In reality all you’ll get will be our eternal gratitude. Thank you all in advance!

Using my Harmony with osx xbmc would be GREAT!

    > Using my Harmony with osx xbmc would be GREAT!
I think this question could have been added to the survey, as Logitech Harmony universal remotes are very popular nowadays

Thanks for all your hard work, my only mac was missing (mba), but it´s chooking when playing hd-material´s, I´m hooping for an updated mac-mini soon so I can get my second one ;).
    /Cheers!

    Completed!

  7. Gustav April 16th, 2008 10:06 am

Last question should have another option… I actually started using xmbc on Xbox because of xmbc on the mac :-)

  8. Cayce April 16th, 2008 10:07 am

Harmony users just mark Universal IR Remote - from our point of view how we support Universal IR Remotes doesn’t change much between URC, Harmony, Pronto, etc…

i think the perfect remote for ocxbmc is the ipod touch/iphone.
(i already bought one and i am testing out different applications for remotecontrol)
think about the possibilities (like remote play for PS3/PSP)

    /bye.

Survey is done and all the hardwork. XBMC is on my Mini HTPC is amazing.

FYI - I’ve already got XBMC working seamlessly with Remote Buddy via a very simple setup.

    >>Using my Harmony with osx xbmc would be GREAT!
    >I think this question could have been added to the survey, as Logitech Harmony universal remotes are very popular nowadays

I’ve already got XBMC working with my 880 Harmony. Just download the Apple commands directly from Logitech. Once the commands are on the Harmony, your should be able to use it just as you would the Apple remote.

  11. Canuck73 April 16th, 2008 10:31 am

    I meant to say

Survey is done and thanks for all the hardwork.

  12. luna_s April 16th, 2008 10:44 am

    filled in :)

i’m using a xbox remote using a hacked up controller port and dongle - works good - just adds to the authentic xbmc feel ;p

  13. azrael April 16th, 2008 10:53 am

webinterface via iphone /ipd touch od similar wifi devices will be really cool…

does the httpAPI already have JSON or XML format?

I think i’ll try making a nice small webIF port…

  14. lynx1981 April 16th, 2008 11:18 am

    survey is completed…

    thanx for the hard work!!!!!!!!!

    it’s getting better & better…..

    Survey completed :)

Keep up the good work! Really love osxbmc… I hardly use my xbox anymore.

  16. Jakob Metzger April 16th, 2008 12:27 pm

I like using Touchpad Pro on my iPhone to control xbmc. It easily switches to a mouse and keyboard for doing small maintenence on my mini and then I can just pop XBMC back on and keep using it!!!! Plus very very very fast response time. I didn’t think it would work so well.

I use a combination of Touchpad Pro for iPhone, the Apple Remote(very seldom though), an original Xbox remote, and a single mouse(for Sys. Prefs. changing options)

Also, the video through Apple Screen Sharing has completely stopped in fullscreen mode but is perfect in windowed mode. The fullscreen stopping started this release and it used to tear but was enough for me to move around in the menus.

    azrael:

I would like to check that out if you ever get started on it, or maybe I could help out too. LMK

    luna_s:

Me too!! Its like using the original NES controller to play emulators!! Only problem I had was that I keymapped number 1 to volume down, 2 to mute, and 3 to volume up!
What are you using? I have the HID driver hooked up to gamepad companion and love it!

  17. Buster April 16th, 2008 12:39 pm

    Complete, happy to help!

  18. LAVAWEB April 16th, 2008 1:35 pm

@tarzan: I’m using my Logitech Harmony to control all of XBMC (from turning on the plasma, switching input, setting input on my home theater, to opening XBMC) all with the USB IR Receiver from Keyspan ($30) HTH

  19. Andy April 16th, 2008 1:59 pm

Completed. Commenting to amplify the harmony 880 love. Seriously though, it’s snazzy, and can control everything else in my house. Why not the osx xbmc?

  20. adrian April 16th, 2008 5:35 pm

Im using the apple remote, but i would love the xbox360 wireless controller to be fixed, it works, but it shuts down after 15 minutes of inactivity and thats it, you have to shut down xbmc and reopen it to get it working again. Im using apple remote because the xbox360 controller is not working, but if i had it working i wouldnt touch the apple remote.

gamepad companion here too :) works great - just got to make my hacked up dongle a little neater

Thanks to everyone for filling out the surveys so far! We’ll post a summary of the responses in a few days when everyone’s had a chance to respond.

  23. fpoil April 16th, 2008 10:23 pm

    done

  24. JayBird April 16th, 2008 10:48 pm

    Done :)

  25. jagaskywalker April 16th, 2008 11:24 pm

For remote access and control I would use this:

    http://tlrobinson.net/projects/xbmciphone/

Unfortunalelly I do not have an iPhone yet, and it does not work well on PDAs…

There is also a “native” iPhone application in the works…

    Done deal :)

  27. Cranial Lethargy April 17th, 2008 12:50 am

Too many beers to do survey tonight, but was wondering, is your house carpeted or hardwood? I’m better at sweeping that vacuuming.

  28. CurryKitten April 17th, 2008 3:23 am

I’m looking forward to the next release in order to see what else I might need - i’e remotebuddy. Right now my Harmony One remote is just acting as the normal Apple remote, which is fine - aside from being a bit slow to respond, and you can’t keep your finger on the button to keep scrolling.

The only pain is that I need to drag myself off the sofa to wiggle the mouse around to start XBMC. So I’m eager to see if we’ll be able to start XBMC via the remote now… or if I’ll need to go down the root of a python pluging to Frontrow, or indeed I end up with remote buddy.

  29. fpoil April 17th, 2008 6:55 am

    @ CurryKitten

with remote buddy and a small applescript assigned to a button, you can start xbmc :

    Tell application “xbmc” to activate

    Hi,

first thanks for all the great work! Is there some way to donate via paypal ?

Did the survey, but didn’t find my preferred controller listed… I used XBMC with my Xbox for years and even tried XBMC Linux and had my old Xbox working. I would love to use the original remote…any chance that that is possible soon ? I would donate cash to get that done! and If you would manage to assign a button to sleep/wake the mac that…that would be insane!! :-)

Hey “luna_s” saw your post…did it get this right ? you got your original xbox remote working ? can I ask you how ? I got a usb adapter but no driver for Max OSX ?

    thanks,

  31. Tom April 19th, 2008 12:17 pm

    thanks for the awesome program!

i use an external E-MU sound interface plugged into a USB port to playback my audio, which is working fine

xbmc seems to be the only program that can play 1080p mkv files nicely on my macbook pro (i read that you patched the player to support multi-core, which none of mplayer, perian or vlc seem to do yet) so thanks a bunch!

  32. Terry April 20th, 2008 12:11 am

Sweet can’t wait for the next release and survey done!

  33. Chris April 20th, 2008 11:02 pm

    Everything is perfect!
But on top of everything, no matter how proprietary it may sound, why can’t mplayer be used to load RMVB and other closed source files? It works and satisfies a whole of people :)

Insistance on using dvdplayer / ffmpeg ONLY is my only gripe but nonetheless a wonderful piece of software.

  34. topfs2 April 21st, 2008 6:26 am

Chris it would include spending redicious amount of time for playing codecs that often a minority use. Also the implementation is less than ideal as it’s hard to have it be used as an embedded video source, as DVDPlayer, which lets us use overlays and such over. this works on xbox seeing is a, correct me if I’m wrong, very modified one.
If you really need it then check out the patch on sourceforge which lets you call external players from xbmc, not fancy and not as neatly packaged but you can’t have the cake and eat it at the same time ;)

It seems that the dn-0.com site is currently off-line? (holland).

  36. Oyvind April 21st, 2008 10:45 am

The survey seems down (”Service unavailable”)…

  37. mcbrems April 21st, 2008 12:56 pm

I noticed the dn-0.com site has been down since at least 11pm PST Sunday night.

  38. elan April 21st, 2008 1:00 pm

Oyvind: There was a glitch in PollDaddy, but I think it’s up again.

mcbrems: Yeah, dn-0 is down. The owner is out here in my neck of the woods, and so is unable to bring it back up. Should be back by late tomorrow.

Chris: I’d like eventually to support Windows DLL loading for this kind of thing.

Cranial Lethargy: Excellent, because we do have wood floors!

  39. alexg April 22nd, 2008 2:34 pm

this is killing me… isn’t there a mirror somewhere? i just found about this and i’m super phsyced! i havent used xbmc since original xbox :(

  40. elan April 22nd, 2008 2:43 pm
  41. mcbrems April 22nd, 2008 5:57 pm

I think the problem with the link above is that the url path is incorrect. The one below works:

    http://dn-0.com/xbmc-trac/raw-attachment/wiki/WikiStart/XBMC-0.4.5.dmg

  42. Chris April 22nd, 2008 11:52 pm

    topfs2 / elan,

Thanks for the tip topfs2. Will lookup the patch at sourceforge. There’s an article /forum somewhere regarding this as well (i lost my history page earlier, can’t find it now)

Elan, thanks for your response, but do put this on the backburner for now as topfs2 said, it is a minority kind of thing and I do agree on this but yes, windows dll loading option would be fantastic as it will essentially be 100% like the xbox xbmc..

Again, thanks for the effort! These few months have been very exciting for a new mac mini owner!
