Release 0.5.0b5: Time for a release candidate?
OK, couldn’t resist making a micro release (Torrent, HTTP, source) to fix a couple of problems.
- NEW: Mixdown for AAC 5.1 (many thanks to tokyovigilante for the patch!) Those HD trailers from Apple work perfectly now.
- FIX: Crash playing certain MKV files (great bug report by bmfrosty).
- FIX: DVD playing over SMB (and other network protocols) should work now. mtehonica, if you could test, that would be much appreciated.
Bob Jelica pointed out that it might be nice to list areas to focus on testing with each release, and I think it’s a great idea. Here are the areas which I think might still be problematic and for which it would be awesome to get some detailed Trac reports for:
- Power saving settings (sleep display, sleep machine) in the app.
- OS X screen savers and multiple displays.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend! If you haven’t stopped by the forums yet, come on in, the water is warm and there are no sharks.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the SMB problem still exists elan.
I reopened Trac ticket #230 and uploaded a new error report.
Not sure if this is very relevant to you, but just noticed this on: http://www.dvhardware.net/article27538.html
“In the future we’ll see many more applications that will take advantage of the computational power of GPUs to significantly speed up specific tasks. Later this summer NVIDIA will unveil new software that will make HD video transcoding much faster and the firm will also roll out a software update that will add AGEIA PhysX support to all GeForce 8/9 and GeForce GTX 200 series graphics cards.”
Your doggie looks like a distinguished gentleman.
Elan:
I’ve been away for a bit but was wondering if any of your latest releases addressed/fixed the A/V de-sync issue when playing back 1080p/24 .mkv’s at 1080p/24 video res.
Thanks, some beer money on the way!
Eq
Thanks for another release!
One great addition would be the ability to directly specify advanced parameters in mplayer (’cause XMBC uses mplayer, isn’t it?). I’m not asking for new options, but for one option: a string that will be appended to mplayer. For example, if in this option I put this: “-vf rotate=2″, the command will be “mplayer file.mkv -vf rotate=2″, or so. I know, is a dumb example but this has a lot of potencial for the power users
MPlayer OSX, the wrapper around mplayer for Mac, has this option, if you want to try it. Personally, this would help me with my peculiar sound installation…
Is there a way to choose the audio options and subtitles during play?
@Victor Pimentel
The OS-X, Linux, and Windows port do not use mplayer. They use a custom ffmpeg interface called dvdplayer that started life as XBMC for XBox’s way of getting past mplayer limitations when dealing with actual dvds. There is some technical reason why mplayer was dropped in the linuxport project, but I’m not entirely sure of all the details.
@Roopesh Sheth
Audio and Subtitle options can be chosen by hitting ‘m’ on your keyboard, pressing the up arror, and then hitting enter. This brings you into the audio and subtitle configuration menu.
Thank’s for the update. That bugfix really illustrates the difference between the Core XBMC team and this project. That bug report sat on sourceforge for two weeks without any indication that it had even been looked at.
On the #148 ticket description, it says: “At worst, play two channels. At best, re-encode as AC-3.” I’m not entirely familiar with the terminology, but “mixdown” implies that the two-channel approach is taken?
(I ask, because this is somewhat relevant to a similar open ticket of mine, #159, which I was delighted to see refreshed by iordonez a couple of days ago - maybe I’ll hear sound from those FLAC LPCM audio track MKV’s one day ;-))
@bmfrosty
I think the question is if there is any “quick” access to the settings. Something like “hit X to cycle through available subtitles/audio channels”. I can see why this would be an interesting keyboard mapping. It would match what’s normally found in TV Channels and DVD players. I would gladly swap the “movie info” button for the subtitles one.
Currently, I think, there is halfway support for this in the keymap ( http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Keymap.xml ). There is one key for “Next Subtitle” (NextSubtitle ) and one key to “Toggle subtitles” (ShowSubtitles). There isn’t a combination key for both and I haven’t tried if the former includes “no subtitle” in the cycle. Same for language (”AudioNextLanguage”).
(there is also keys for the delay for the subtitles, which could be implemented as combination keys: Press one button then another for adjusting back and forth).
On a different (but related) note. I have noticed my 360 wireless controller is all over the place. Thumbsticks don’t scrub, small shoulder (”black/white”) buttons don’t react. Pressing both thumbsticks doesn’t bring up the shutdown dialog and pressing the right thumbstick doesn’t take a screenshot.
I very well know this may be a fault of my particular set-up and I have repeatedly deleted my keymap file but I was wondering if this is all supposed to work or maybe I’m just expecting something that isn’t there.
I’m not complaining, BTW, just trying to find where the problem might be (or if there is, indeed, such a problem).
Great Barkley pictures:D
The last one was also cute
I’m convinced Barkley is secretly doing the majority of the coding because he loves the attention
Just kidding … keep up the fantastic work Elan!
Also for anyone that was having trouble with the AEON skin and their GMA950 — djh released a new version (Alpha 10) that fixes past GPU issues
@eudo
I have some thoughts on what to do about subtitle and audio track switching - most of it should be easy changes in keymap.xml. I have discovered a bug however, and I’ll be posting a bug report as soon as I can quantify it. As far as the 360 wireless joystick stuff, I don’t have that hardware, and can’t test, but I do have a wired 360 controller, and will play with that a little, and see if I can replicate what you’re seeing, but it’s not really my area of expertise.
If you’ve got a little time, it may be worth reading keymap.xml as it will probably answer some of your questions - there may be functions that just aren’t supported yet.
Hello, if anyone can confirm that AEON skin is not showing “Now Playing” in Music category correctly in OSXBMC….for some reason I’m getting black screen instead of Now playing window( http://idisk.mac.com/sebastianzz/Public/xbmc.jpg )
BTW Thank’s for the update Elan.
@bmfrosty
I’ll check the keymap.xml file. I planned to do so anyway but I wrote the earlier one from the office and wanted to see if it was common. I guess it really isn’t.
About the subtitles, I’m really surprised the subtitle cycler doesn’t include “no subtitle” as one of its options. Sounds logical to me
@eduo
That will probably be part of the bug report. I’ve got a lot on my plate for after I get home tonight.
Confirm that playing DVD over SMB still does not work. However if use mac’s SMB (by creating an alias to a remote folder in my home directory and adding my home directory as an XMBC’s video source) the same DVD plays fine.
@eduo
I’ve added feature request to switch audio streams by pressing ‘a’ on the keyboard. There are some other things that I need to put together… NextSubtitle seems… broken, and audio stream switching has some problems too.
Excellent that the AAC 5.1 issue has a temporary quick fix… Ive been trying to convert it to AC3 without any success so this is a welcome fix.
Im hoping that full AAC 5.1 support won’t be far behind?
Congrats on a great piece of software.
I *think* I can get AC3 encoding working from any source, not just from AAC 5.1. I’m looking at integrating an open-source AC3 encoder called Aften (aften.sourceforge.net) into elan’s PortAudio code. I might need a coupla weekends though.
Hi tokyo, thanks for your fix man, it’s helped me alot.
Funnily enough I was trying to transcode AC3 to AAC 5.1 with Aften but didn’t have much luck. The audio that came out sounded really high pitched. I was using BeSweet Bass (AAC) to Aften (AC3). Hope you have been luck than me
What type/breed of dog is Barkley? He’s awfully cute.
@Equusz: Not that I know of, but there have been player changes, so please feel free to retest.
@John: Barkley’s lack of opposable thumbs make it very hard for him to code in anything but Ruby.
@tokyovigilante: Keep me posted, very excited about your work!
@Drel: Bullmastiff+Rhodesian or Bullmastiff+American Staff, not completely sure.
